My daughter Lucy and a few of her friends started a book club this summer, and whoever is hosting gets to choose the book. When it was Lucy's turn, she chose The Secret Garden, a favorite of mine when I was her age.
She invited her friends over for a Victorian tea party using her great grandmother's china, and the girls loved how fancy the table was. They had a surprisingly great book discussion while they ate sandwiches, drank tea (sweet iced tea from a real silver teapot), and treated themselves to orange meltaway cookies. After food and discussion, it was time for the craft.
When you're reading a book about gardens and you have a mom who is really into miniatures, you come up with a craft that combines the two: secret fairy gardens! This turned into such a fun activity, and the girls had a chance to be really creative.
Each girl received an inexpensive planter base filled with soil, a fairy house preassembled, and lots of accessories to decorate their gardens however they wanted. The girls loved it so much that they encouraged me to offer this as the next subscription box, and I thoght that was a brilliant idea.
Pro tip for the tiny trim pieces: Put down some painter's tape with the sticky side up and attach the trim pieces so they don't move around while you're painting.
I basically just put out a bunch of crafty stuff and let them go to town. It was interesting seeing how each girl did something totally different.
If you're interested in hosting your own fairy garden party for your kids, just shoot me an email at hello@miniadventuresco.com, and we can work together for me to send you full kits.
This month's box includes a fairy house DIY Kit and accessories to make your very own fairy garden. If you're new here or stumbled across this post by accident, you can click here to learn more about The Adventure Box, a small world play quarterly subscription box for kids.
Your bag of accessories includes lots of fun things to decorate a fairy garden, including a pond, wooden sign, rocks, buttons, wood slices, a tiny duck, some plants, and enough moss to use for the base and roof od the fairy house. There are so many great ways to decorate a fairy garden so feel free to add whatever you want.
The DIY Kit includes:
-Base
-Front and Back pieces
-2 Side Walls
-2 Roof Pieces
-Trim pieces for the door and windows
Check out the video above for assembly instructions for the fairy house DIY Kit. I recommend assembling the house and then doing whatever painting you want to do. The girls really enjoyed getting to pick out their colors. Add the painted trim pieces last, and a jewelry bead makes a great doorknob. If you want to use the moss for the base and roof, just turn the moss over and trace whichever piece you want to cover. Cut it out, peel the backing and stick it on.
I hope you and your little one enjoy fall and head outside to soak up the beautiful weather. Be sure to tag me on Instagram @mini.adventures.co and use #theadventurebox!
